According to mythological belief, Amarkantak is the area of two Shaktipeeths. It is believed that when Sati gave up her life by jumping into the sacrificial fire of her father Daksha Prajapati, Lord Shiva performed Tandava with her body and Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, two of those pieces fell in this area. Of these two Shaktipeeths of Amarkantak, one is near the origin of the Son River at Son Mudha and the other is near the temple of Parvati ji near the origin of Narmada ji
Shona Shaktipeeth or Kalmadhava Shaktipeeth located in Amarkantak is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. This temple is made of white stones and there is a pond around it. It is believed that the left hip of Goddess Sati had fallen here, although some people believe that the neck of Sati had fallen here.
Amarkantak is believed to be a place of immortality, where gods and goddesses reside and whoever dies here is guaranteed heaven. It is a Hindu and Jain religious site and has many historical Shiva, Vaishnavite, Shakta and Svetambara Jain temples. There is also a Sri Yantra temple in Amarkantak.
