my IUD story started about 4 years ago and ended a few weeks ago. the trauma I experienced having my IUD placed will live with me for the rest of my life and is something that does not deserve to be downplayed or ignored, and no woman should have to experience something so painful and unnecessary. for centuries our pain has been ignored and brushed off. we are in the year 2021 and something that has the potential to be so violating and damaging to a woman's mental and physical well-being is offered casually and as something that can be managed with "ibuprofen and pain killers." had I known how painful the IUD placement can be I would have had the proper knowledge to be able to correctly consent and would not have felt violated in the way I did. moreover, I most likely would not have waited 4 years to remove something that was causing me so much agony all because I was terrified of experiencing what happened to me having the contraception placed initially. I'm sorry that we have to fight to have our pain validated and heard, but do not stop fighting, and if an iud is the right option for you, ask for correct pain management and stop at nothing less. if the pain becomes unbearable or very bad afterwards, don't wait it out thinking it will get better and do not let individuals in health-care diminish and normalize your pain. it is not normal. love you x
