Sleep is essential for child development; it serves as a critical period for physical growth, brain maturation and emotional regulation. A good night’s rest enables memory consolidation, boosts the immune system and directly influences learning, behavior and attention spans.
Children's sleep needs vary depending on their age, with recommendations ranging from 12 to 16 hours for toddlers to 8 to 10 hours for teenagers.
Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. children don’t consistently get the recommended amount of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation, while only 14% of elementary-aged kids meeting national guidelines. Over time, it can influence mental health and behavior, academic performance and physical health, including a higher risk of obesity, weakened immune system and daytime fatigue.
In the latest installment of its Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar series, South Texas Health System Children’s will shine a spotlight on the importance of sleep for children’s health.
During the webinar, a healthcare professional will guide families through the essentials of healthy sleep, including how to recognize signs of poor sleep quality, how to build routines that work even in busy households and when to seek guidance from a healthcare provider.
