Welcome to Episode Two of our Oman series, covering our 1 month 4x4 camping road trip around Oman in February and March 2022. In this episode we head north of Muscat with our rented Toyota Fortuner (hired via https://bit.ly/OmanCarHire) and our camping gear (check out the full list here https://www.goingthewholehogg.com/bac...) to explore Wadi Al Abyadh, the Ghubrah Bowl, and Wadi Bani Kharus.

Our first stop is picturesque Wadi Al Abyadh, just an hour from Muscat, to wander among the white and icy blue pools rich in calcite. Then we head into the Ghubrah Bowl on the hunt for a camp spot. On a whim we follow a track climbing a hillside to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the bowl and surrounding mountains. There’s just enough space to park the 4x4 and pitch our tent, too : ) It’s so calm and peaceful the next morning, definitely a top breakfast view!

Next, we head to Wakan village, beautiful at any time of year but particularly so in early spring when the peach and apricot blossom blooms. There is a path leading up through the plantations to a viewpoint high above the village, or if you fancy a full on hike there is a trail connecting to Hadash via the strenuous W25 hike, or less challenging W24b hike.

We find another fantastic wild camp spot, our very own ‘mini canyon’, and relax with a campfire under the full moon. The next day we drive up Wadi Bani Kharus, stopping to admire some Yemeni style houses (some of which are abandoned and crumbling away) before heading off on a wadi hike from Al Alia (Al Alya) village to the pools above Ad Dar. The route is waymarked by painted rocks and you should allow about 4 hours for the return hike, including swimming time.

It’s nearly dark by the time we find a camp spot at the top of a pass connecting the Wadi Bani Kharus area with Wadi Bani Awf. What amazing views!
