Ismail Marzuki (also known as Bang Ma'ing; 11 May 1914 – 25 May 1958) was an Indonesian composer, songwriter and musician who wrote around 202 to 240 songs between 1931 and 1958, including numerous popular patriotic songs. Among his best-known works are "Halo, Halo Bandung", "Gugur Bunga", and "Rayuan Pulau Kelapa". In 1968, he was honoured with the creation of the well-known Taman Ismail Marzuki (the Ismail Marzuki Park, often called TIM) which is a cultural centre in Menteng in central Jakarta. In 2004 he was declared one of the National Heroes of Indonesia.
Gugur bunga / Fallen flower are supposed to be played with solemn and dignified manner, depicting the fallen soldiers effort of fighthing for indonesia's independence, and keroncong is supposed to be this folk dance-able tune that is an adaptation of a European (particularly the Portuguese and Dutch) musical tradition, brought by the European colonizers to the Java and Eastern Indonesian port cities in the 16th century.
This piece is politically motivated, made this as a form of protest to my government, cause of their pure incompetence (i dont want to say it like that, theres still good people thats in them, but mostly arent.), rampant corruption, and recently, the massive deforestation campaign thats going to turn 1/3rd of indonesia's forests & jungles into palm oil plantation. they has always pleague my country. and how the government seemingly kept on "dancing" on top of the peoples outcry, missery, and freedom that is fought by and brought upon by the fallen heroes of this nation.
