ABOUT THE KNOT
The Scott’s Locked Bowline is a clever and secure upgrade to the classic Bowline knot — one of the most trusted loops in ropework. Invented by Scott Safier from the IGKT forum, this modern twist improves upon the original design by locking the tag end inside the loop, preventing slippage even when there’s little to no tension on the rope.
🔹 Pros:
• More secure than the regular Bowline
• Resistant to cross-loading and capsizing
• Easy to untie even after heavy loading
🔸 Cons:
• Slightly more complex to tie than a standard Bowline
• Not as widely known or documented (not included in the Ashley Book of Knots)
⚓ Applications:
• Climbing, caving, and rescue – A dependable alternative when safety and security matter most.
• Mooring and securing loads – Forms a fixed loop that holds steady under variable tension.
• Camping and outdoor use – Ideal for tying down gear or creating stable anchor loops.
Fun fact: The Scott’s Locked Bowline is based on the Left-Handed Bowline (ABoK #1034½) and is often called the “Secured Bowline.”
