Smoking fumaroles, ghostly figures, gaping rifts in the earth's core and soothing milky blue waters make the Reykjanes Peninsula perhaps one of the most underrated places in Iceland. With expansive lava fields covered in moss, the landscape is filled with old craters, fissures, and bubbling, geothermal mud pools.
Here at Midlina, you can walk between the two tectonic plates (North American and Euroasian) that are slowly pulling Iceland apart - one of the only places on earth where a continental rift is not buried under the oceans. At Valahnukur, the sea violently hammers against amazing rock formations along its coastline, which it has been doing for centuries.
Gunnuhver is a highly active geothermal area of mud pools and steam vents boiling practically under your feet. The area is a bit haunted and also dangerous. The colorful minerals in the landscape are stunning, but with water temperatures over 500 degrees Fahrenheit, it is important to stick to the walkways.
Gunnuhver was named after an angry female ghost named Gunna, whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs by a priest over 400 years ago, the area has an eerie, sulfurous atmosphere. It is said you can still see her spirit trying to escape through the steamy mist.
Many also visit the Blue Lagoon, one of the top spas in the world. Soaking in its healing, milky blue waters is a must for any visitor to Iceland. And a final stop in Keflavik, before flying home from the Keflavik airport, to visit the Giantess in the Cave.
