The president of Macedonia - who is on an official visit to the United States - met President Bill Clinton on Tuesday.

Kiro Gligorov praised NATO's role in the Balkan region and called for more U-S investment in his country.

The president of Macedonia arrived early for his meeting with President Bill Clinton on Tuesday.

During their meeting, Kiro Gligorov praised the role NATO had played in the Balkans and said his country would accept a NATO presence in Macedonia.

SOUNDBITE: (Macedonian)
"I personally believe that the presence of these forces have greatly contributed to settling this issue and ending the senseless war that was there - it ended the killing, it ended the ethnic cleansing, and therefore I believe that it would be very positive if they remain in the Balkans, this region where Macedonia is also located. In this sense Macedonia is willing to accept a part of or an overall presence in our country."

He also took the opportunity to invite more U-S private investment in his country and said it would contribute to stability in Macedonia.

"We believe that the presence of U-S companies and U-S business is as significant for the stability and security of Macedonia as significant as the presence of the NATO. And I believe that the presence of their capital would be a positive thing for the development of Macedonia, a country which is not a high risk country."
