A 13.5 minute video summary of a 7th grade "Students & Stories in Spanish" class.
In my view, this was a "home run" class. This is the norm in my classroom when I teach this way. Putting Babe Ruth to shame ;)
This is HAPPY, HEART-FILLED, HUMANE, HOLISTIC language instruction.
My* "method" is . . .
A comprehension-based, communicative approach
unplanned, non-targeted, sheltered vocabulary
collaborative storytelling activity, among other activities
*By saying that this is my way, does not mean that these ideas and practices originated with me. It simply means: this outlines and best describes what I do.
I have absolute freedom at my school to align my classroom practice to MY understanding of language, language acquisition, and communication and freedom to prioritize goals how I desire.
This is a form of TPRS for more experienced teachers and experienced students. Some missing features of TPRS, e.g.
no targeted structures
no circling
less massed repetitions in favor of more spaced repetitions
no choral responses
no grammar pop-ups
no clear "step 1" of pre teaching and PQA'ing vocabulary
no emphasis on accurate verb forms from student actors
etc.
These kids maybe had 100 hours of comprehension-based instruction between 4th-6th grade and have had about 50 hours of comprehension-based instruction so far this year.
The video starts with a summary of info about how this class time was/is spent and some more info about the student population.
