CHART for Jazz Band

Composed in 1977, this piece looks back at my beginnings in music as a jazz musician. I used blues-derived gestures and a large jazz band to create a pastiche of various elements. It has the appearance of a normal jazz chart with an intro of high trumpet screams, the head, an extended tenor sax solo, and an out chorus. Special features of this piece is the tenor sax solo, spectacularly performed by the marvelous musician Larry Honda. He had to improvise his solo interpreting a film of bizarre imagery. The out chorus begins normally, but the band begins to fragment with groups playing in different tempi simultaneously and gradually splitting into individual solos. CHART ends with a coda that is the inversion of the intro with the trombones playing low pedal point blasts, and heavy punctuations by the percussion.
