Lecture on "Benzene and Its Derivatives " , by PUSHKAR KUMAR RAY , Assistant Professor, IIMT College of Pharmacy, Greater Noida
Benzene derivatives are compounds that are derived from benzene. Some common benzene
derivatives include:
Toluene: A mono-substituted benzene derivative that is used in paint thinners, nail polish
removers, and adhesives
Phenol: A benzene derivative that is used in making polycarbonate plastics, epoxies, and
detergents
Nitrobenzene: A benzene derivative that is used in the manufacture of aniline, which is
further used in dyes, plastics, and pharmaceuticals
Benzaldehyde: A benzene derivative
Benzoic acid: A benzene derivative
Styrene: A benzene derivative
Naphthalene: A benzene derivative
Phenanthrene: A benzene derivative
Benzene derivatives can be divided into two groups based on the type of substituent that the
ring carries:
Activated rings: The substituents on the ring are groups that donate electrons
Deactivated rings: The substituent on the ring is groups that withdraw electrons
Many substituted arenas have potent biological activity, including common drugs and
antibiotics, illicit drugs, amino acids, and hormones.
