AFB (American Foulbrood) Ropiness Test (Disclaimer - video content may be disturbing to some).

Описание: The cells in these videos were most likely only EFB - but there was some possible ropiness. In one cell (not in the video) did rope pass an inch (sorry, wish I would have recorded it), so this hive mostly likely had both EFB and AFB as well as chalkbrood and other viruses(very sad hive). The hive was treated as having AFB.

A 'rope test' can be used to provide a field examination on whether a hive has AFB.

AFB and EFB have some similarities, but during this test, using a toothpick (or, in this case, a nail).

A capped cell will be perforated ( the capping being pierced with a hole or holes), and can have a greasy appearance.

During this test, stir the larva remains and pull them out slowly. If the larval remains have a glue-like consistency and string out about an inch, the cell is considered to have AFB.

Unlike AFB, EFB capped cells have a watery consistency (like in the video), and do not readily rope.

If you do suspect AFB, by using the ropiness test, it's best to contact your local or state bee inspector, who may provide further details, including getting the combs inspected at a bee lab. The ropiness is not a sure test (as you can see, there can be some thought of the level of 'ropiness'). So, if you are unsure, it is always a good idea to have one or two (or more, depending on the size of your operation) AFB test kits on hand to provide a more accurate assessment.
