Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer found in men, especially those over the age of 50. The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its main function is to produce seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm.

Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably. While some prostate cancers grow very slowly and may not cause serious harm, others can be aggressive and spread quickly to other parts of the body, such as the bones or lymph nodes.

The exact cause of prostate cancer is not fully known, but several risk factors increase the chances of developing it. These include older age, family history of prostate cancer, certain genetic mutations, obesity, and a diet high in red meat or fatty foods. African and Asian ancestry can also influence risk levels, with higher rates seen in African men.

In the early stages, prostate cancer usually does not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, men may experience frequent urination, especially at night, difficulty starting or stopping urine flow, weak urine stream, blood in urine or semen, pain in the pelvic area, or discomfort during ejaculation. In advanced cases, it may cause back pain or bone pain if the cancer spreads.

Diagnosis of prostate cancer typically involves a few key tests. Doctors often start with a PSA blood test — PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen. High PSA levels may indicate cancer or other prostate problems. Another common test is the digital rectal exam, where a doctor checks the prostate’s shape and size. If abnormalities are found, further imaging or a biopsy is performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment depends on the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer. For slow-growing cancers, doctors may recommend active surveillance, meaning regular monitoring without immediate treatment. Other options include surgery to remove the prostate gland, radiation therapy, hormone therapy to block testosterone (which fuels prostate cancer cells), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy in advanced cases.

Early detection plays a vital role in successful treatment. Men over 50, or earlier if there’s a family history, should discuss regular PSA screenings with their doctor. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also lower risk — this includes eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking.

In most cases, prostate cancer can be managed effectively when detected early. Thanks to modern medicine, survival rates are high, and many men live long, healthy lives after treatment.

So, awareness, regular checkups, and a healthy lifestyle are the keys to fighting prostate cancer.

Stay aware, stay healthy.
