Elements vs Compounds (Definitions, Examples, and Practice)

Описание: A key skill in chemistry is knowingly the difference between elements and compounds. Elements are listed on the Periodic Table (there are currently 118 known elements). Compounds are made up of elements (there are billions of possible combinations of elements to make compounds).

Elements
· One type of atom.
· All elements (118) found on Periodic Table.
· Can be chemically bonded to each other.
· Examples: Na, Fe, He, Au, C

Compounds
· Two or more different types of atoms.
· Billions of different compounds are possible.
· Atoms in compounds are chemically bonded.
· Examples: NaCl, MgBr2, H2O, C6H12O6

There are two areas that students find confusing. First is the idea of pure substances. Elements can be considered pure substances. But compounds can also be considered to be pure substances if there is only one type of compound. We can have pure water (H2O) or pure table salt (NaCl).

Second is when we have molecules like O2, H2, N2, P4, S8 … These are molecules but because they are made of only one type of element we call them "Molecular Elements".
