An Irish farm lad smitten by a brown-haired lass. I've always been greatly annoyed that we aren't told whether she accepted his marriage proposal.
The Star of the County Down
Near to Banbridge town in the County Down one morning in July,
Down a green boreen came a fair colleen, and she smiled as she passed me by.
Oh, she looked so neat, from 'er two white feet to the sheen of 'er nut-brown hair.
Sure the coaxing elf, I'd to pinch meself to be sure I was standin' there.
REFRAIN
Now, from Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and from Galway to Dublin town,
I have never seen such a fair colleen as the maid from the County Down.
As she onward sped, I shook me head and I gazed with a feeling quaar,
And I said, says I, to a passerby, "Who's the maid with the nut-brown hair?"
Oh, he smiled at me and with pride says he, "She's the jewel of Ireland's crown,
"Young Rosie McCann from the banks o' the Bann, the star of the County Down."
At the crossroads fair I will sure be there, and I'll dress in me Sunday clothes,
And I'll try sheeps' eyes and delud'ring lies on the heart o' the nut-brown Rose.
No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke, though me plow with the rust turns brown,
Til a smiling bride by me own fireside sits the star of the County Down.
