Seeing physical processes often provides unique insights into how they work. To study processes faster than the eye can see, high-speed imaging can be used for visualization. This video example shows what happens when a 4-mm drop of water lands in a pool of water from various heights, slowed down 100 times.
The farther a drop falls, the greater its speed and kinetic energy on impact (increasing left to right in the video). Higher impact energy results in more complex behavior, including crown-shaped splashes and ejection of satellite drops. More subtle effects are also visible, e.g. entrained air bubbles at higher impact energy.
These videos were shot with a Vision Research - Phantom High-Speed Cameras VEO 710. In addition to the camera, high-speed imaging also requires:
• Correctly scaled, highly repeatable test apparatus
• Accurate timing, triggering, and synchronization
• Lenses and lighting for high frame rates
• Post-processing for analysis & comparison
We have experience imaging industrially relevant processes at various time and length scales, as well as in quantitative analysis of image data with standard image processing metrics and with more complex methods like neural network classifiers.
