🌿 Birth of Shakuntala

Shakuntala was born to the great sage Vishvamitra and the celestial nymph Menaka.

After her birth, Menaka left the baby in the forest.
Birds called Shakuntas protected the child.

Later the sage Kanva found the baby and raised her in his hermitage.
Therefore she was named Shakuntala.

👑 Meeting King Dushyanta

One day King Dushyanta came to the forest during a hunting expedition.

He arrived at Kanva’s hermitage and met Shakuntala.
Impressed by her beauty and character, the king fell in love with her.

They married through Gandharva marriage (a marriage based on mutual consent).

Before leaving, the king promised:

👉 Their son would become his successor.

👶 Birth of Bharata

Later Shakuntala gave birth to a powerful son named Bharata.

As a child, Bharata was extremely brave.
He played fearlessly with lions and wild animals.

He later became a great emperor, and the land of India is called Bharat after him.

⚖️ Dushyanta Initially Denies

When Bharata grew older, Shakuntala went to the court of King Dushyanta.

At first the king denied their marriage.

In the original Vyasa Mahabharata version:

There is no curse of Durvasa

There is no lost ring

Dushyanta denied her mainly to avoid public scandal and verify the truth.

🌟 Divine Voice Reveals the Truth

At that moment, a divine voice from heaven (Akashvani) spoke:

👉 Shakuntala is telling the truth.
👉 Bharata is truly the son of Dushyanta.

After hearing this divine confirmation, the king accepted Shakuntala and Bharata.

🕉️ Importance of the Story

This story explains the origin of Emperor Bharata, after whom the country Bharat (India) is named.

It also shows:

Truth eventually triumphs

Dharma protects the righteous
