Eye Flu – medically known as Conjunctivitis- is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the eye's white part and the eyelid's inside. Bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants can cause it. Here are some causes, treatment, and prevention tips for Conjunctivitis
Causes:
• Bacteria: Bacterial Conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
• Viruses: Viral Conjunctivitis is caused by viruses, such as adenovirus, herpes simplex virus, or varicella-zoster virus.
• Allergies: Allergic Conjunctivitis is caused by allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.
• Irritants: Irritant Conjunctivitis is caused by exposure to substances that irritate the eyes, such as smoke, chemicals, or fumes.
Treatment:
• Antibiotics: Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial Conjunctivitis. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment.
• Antivirals: Antiviral medications are used to treat viral Conjunctivitis. No specific antiviral eye drops or ointment exist, but oral antiviral medicines may help.
• Eye drops: Artificial tears or antihistamine eye drops can help relieve the symptoms of allergic Conjunctivitis.
• Cold compresses: Applying a cold compress to your eyes can help reduce swelling and inflammation.
Prevention:
 Wash your hands: Wash your hands frequently, especially if you've been around someone with Conjunctivitis.
 Avoid sharing: Don't share towels, pillowcases, or other personal items with someone with Conjunctivitis.
 Avoid touching your eyes: Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, as this can spread the infection.
 Keep your environment clean: Clean surfaces you frequently touch, such as doorknobs, countertops, and keyboards, with disinfectant wipes.
 Protect your eyes: Wear protective eyewear when working with chemicals or playing sports to prevent eye injury.
