India has withdrawn its top envoy from Canada after he was designated a “person of interest” in a high-profile murder case, along with other diplomats, as a festering row between the two countries escalated.

Relations between the two countries crashed in June last year when a Sikh separatist leader and Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was shot dead by masked gunmen outside a temple near Vancouver.
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, has since said there are “credible allegations” that Indian government agents were behind Nijjar’s killing, which India has strongly denied.
