First ever video on Danny's Game Vault: "Toaster Run" from the "After Dark Games" pack. This is what I consider to be the best out of all the 11 games in the pack. It's got to be one of the wackiest concepts for a game: you control a friggin' toaster...with wings (yeah, seriously) and fly around a house, collecting as many goodies as possible to try and get a high score. It's fun the first time you play it, but then it wears off rather quickly, because once you figure out where all the items and secrets are, you are always going to get the highest score each time and breeze through the game in less than 10 minutes, because the layout of the house never changes, nor does the location of the items. The collectibles are mostly baby stuff like rattles, milk bottles and small blue boxes which I can't really tell what they are. There are a lot of hazards scattered around this house and contact with them drains some of your life indicated by the meter in the lower right corner. The include flying into stationary objects, landing on floors, getting hit by darts, jack-in-the-boxes, ceiling fans, gas stoves and barbecue grills which shoot fire, just to name a few ! Water pools or bathtubs with water in them kill you instantly if you land in them and you'll lose a life indicated by the toasters in the bottom right. The same thing happens if the energy meter runs out. Once you lose a life, there's no way of restoring it. Lose all 3 lives and the game is over. Your health, however, can be replenished by touching a wall socket and by picking up slices of bread that lie around. The bread only restores part of your life, while the socket fills the life meter up all the way. Flying the toaster around is a bit awkward at first, because you look at the room at a 45 degree angle, so it's not to easy to figure out which keys you need to press to move straight ahead or diagonally. Once you play it for a while, you'll get used to it though. It's a decent little time killer like all the other games, but it gets old really fast, since the game never changes: it's always the same rooms and the same layout, like I said. You CAN make the game more challenging by selecting a higher difficulty, which adds more hazards and increases the damage they cause and also adds a time limit - the energy meter will slowly go down by itself, even if you stand still, so you have to move as fast as you can, while avoiding hitting stuff at the same time. Even though the replay value is medium to low, if I were to pick one game out of the whole pack to get stuck on a deserted island with, this would be it. Give it a try !
