Representative Mary Peltola of Alaska held a listening session on the pollock trawl fleet's bycatch — its non-targeted catching and wasting of king salmon, chum salmon, halibut, snow crab, Bristol Bay red king crab, herring, and many other species during the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's April meeting.
Every year, the pollock trawl fleet in Alaska catches and, for the most part, wastes an average of 141 million pounds of marine life, for more than 1 billion pounds total. Meanwhile, for three years, people who rely on wild salmon for way of life have been unable to catch even one king salmon.
