The International Space Station is nearing the end of its operational life, and when that day comes, it’s not just the U.S. that’ll be affected—Russia will feel the impact too, since they’ve played a big role in the ISS from the start. But Russia’s not planning to just fade out of the space scene. They’re already working on their own new space station to keep their presence in orbit strong after the ISS retires. While China’s space station is all about sleek efficiency, the Russian project is packed with bold, even wild, ideas that are pretty fascinating to see take shape.

The story of Russia’s next big space venture really began back in April 2021. That’s when Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, announced it was considering leaving the International Space Station program after 2024. Their main concern is related to the aging condition of the ISS’s Russian modules. Then, on July 26, 2022, it became official—Roscosmos confirmed it would be stepping away from the ISS after 2024 and instead focus on building its own space station: the Russian Orbital Space Station, or ROSS.
Fast forward to December 2024, and Roscosmos head Yuri Borisov shared more details. Crewed missions to ROSS are planned to begin in 2028, just as the ISS winds down its operations in coordination with NASA.

So, what exactly is ROSS going to be like?
ROSS actually started out as a reimagining of an older project called OPSEK—the Orbital Piloted Assembly and Experiment Complex—but it evolved into something new: a completely independent station, built from scratch without using any existing parts from the Russian segment of the ISS.
One major difference is the orbit. Instead of following the ISS’s path, ROSS will fly in a sun-synchronous orbit at around 400 kilometers above the Earth. This unique trajectory allows it to observe the entire surface of the planet, including hard-to-reach areas like the Arctic. That means Russia will be able to keep a close eye on its territory with much greater frequency. This orbit also makes it easier to reach the station compared to the ISS, which opens up exciting new possibilities for scientific, medical, and physiological experiments that were previously limited.
