Описание: Project X-Ray was one of the strangest secret weapon programs of WWII. The plan was to strap tiny incendiary time-bombs to Mexican free-tailed bats, cool them into hibernation, and drop them over Japanese cities. The bats would roost in the eaves of wooden Japanese paper houses and ignite simultaneously. In 1943, during a test at Carlsbad Army Airfield, a canister was accidentally released early. The armed bats escaped and roosted under the fuel tanks and barracks of the base. The resulting fire incinerated a large portion of the facility, proving to shocked generals that the weapon was terrifyingly effective. Though the project was eventually cancelled in favor of the atomic bomb, it remains a bizarre testament to the desperate creativity of wartime engineering.
