In the process of weaving a hearth or kitchen broom, this part is called “plaiting”. Plaiting is essentially a basket weave done to the stalk portion of the broom corn plant to create a pattern. Not only is the plaiting at the top of a broom b e a u t i f u l, it also binds the top of the broom to the handle and adds a lovely finishing touch to the piece.
Weaving a broom of this nature is done while the broom corn is wet so that the fibers will bend and not break. I begin by soaking the broom corn in warm water until the stalks are soft, then pulling it out of the water and allowing it to “mellow” for 15-20 minutes. Mellowing means allowing the fibers to rest. This gives the broom corn time to soak the remaining water up into it stalk and makes the weaving process easier and more uniform.
