In the beginning of June 2020, scientist Sonam Wangchuk, who inspired actor Aamir Khan's role in Bollywood movie 3 Idiots, appealed to Indian citizens to boycott all Chinese apps in a week and Chinese hardware in a year in the backdrop of increasing tensions between both countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh after a clash at the Pangong Lake in Eastern Ladakh between both troops.
What followed, was viral trends like #BoycottMadeInChina. Manoj Kewalramani, Fellow - China Studies, Takshashila Institure tells BOOM why boycotting Chinese goods will hurt India more than China and the real concern all of us should be having is who holds the data these apps store, which can be an economic and strategic resource for both countries. He mentions that nationalism is good only until it starts hurting our pockets, after which rational economic decisions take the place of nationalism.
