Water policy review: Ensuring sustainable water management for India
Authors: Sachidanand Kumar, Manish Kumar Goyal
Water policy plays a central role in shaping India’s water security, particularly in ensuring access to clean drinking water and sanitation amid growing pressures from climate change, pollution, aging infrastructure, and rising demand. This video reviews the evolution of India’s water policy and legislation, examining how current frameworks address water scarcity, stress, and future demand.
The discussion highlights innovative policy mechanisms such as smart water grids, water pricing reforms, decentralized wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting, and community participation, while emphasizing regional disparities in implementation. Projections indicate that nearly 12 river basins could face severe water scarcity by 2050, underscoring the urgency for reform. The video advocates for integrated, data-driven, and stakeholder-led approaches, aligned with sustainability goals, to achieve equitable and resilient water management in India and beyond.
