Michigan only has a few true Nerodia water snakes: the northern water snake, the copperbelly water snake, and the Lake Erie water snake. Only the first two appear in this video. The Lake Erie water snake isn’t included because it’s found only on a small group of Lake Erie islands and isn’t something most Michigan residents will ever see.
We decided to include a few partially aquatic species, so this video highlights six snakes you might spot in or near Michigan’s lakes, rivers, and wetlands. A couple of them aren’t true water snakes, but they’re still closely associated with water and often confused with Nerodia species. Including them helps you tell the difference between what’s actually a water snake and what’s just living around wet areas.
Even though some of these snakes get mistaken for cottonmouths, there are no cottonmouths in Michigan. Any reported sighting always turns out to be a northern water snake or another harmless species.
Even though it's not a true water snake either, we did include Michigans only venomous snake, that sometimes hangs out by water. So we weren't too strict on this list because Michigan doesn't have much to offer in the way of water snakes.
