Dr. Thomas Glynn from Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and Dr. J. Taylor Hays from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, review their article appearing in the April 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where they examine the current clinical dilemma – to promote e-cigarettes or not. Dr. Glynn reviews the principle of harm reduction in relation to the use of e-cigarettes and Dr. Hays describes the clinical challenges faced regarding the path clinicians should take. They conclude the human toll from combustible tobacco is unacceptable and that regulations and the tobacco industry need to do better to mitigate the health burden and death toll from smoking.
