Chilean Workers Demand Nationalization of Mines to Defend Labor and to Save the Planet

Our main speaker is Edward Gallardo, who works at the Chuquicamata copper mine in Chile and is the President of the SIM union (Sindicato National Interempresa de los Trabajadores de la Mineria). The SIM was born out of the 2019 social uprising in Chile against 30 years of austerity and neoliberal reforms. Together with other unions, community groups, and socialist organizations, SIM is leading the campaign for the nationalization of all big copper, lithium and gold mines without compensation. Campaigners point out that only workers control will allow the labor movement and farmers to protect the ecosystem and minimize the impacts on nature, reorganizing production for the safety of the workers and the preservation of the ecosystem. This fight can blaze the path for working people fighting economic deprivation, unsafe jobs, imperialism, environmental destruction and pollution everywhere.
