STORYLINE:
Thousands of Shiite Muslims in the Pakistani city of Karachi attended a rally on Saturday, in mourning of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian officials who were killed in US-Israel air strikes last week.

Participants including women and children, were seen holding portraits of Khamenei as well as chanting slogans such as “Death to Israel” and “Down with US”.

“All Muslims are gathered against the oppression and atrocities by the US and Israel. We demand the Pakistani government to come out from US influence and end diplomatic ties,” said Syed Jawwad Hasan Ali Zaidi, a Shiite leader.

Shiite religious leaders paid tribute to Khamenei for his services and reiterated their determination to continue his mission.

Violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi and in the country’s north left at least 22 people dead and more than 120 others injured as demonstrators supportive of the Iranian government attempted to storm a U.S. Consulate last week.

The violence came after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, killing its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei, who ruled Iran since 1989, has long been a central religious and political figure for Shiites worldwide, including in Pakistan. His death in a joint U.S.-Israeli operation at the start of the war last week sparked outrage among many Shiites.

Shiites make up roughly 15% of Pakistan’s population of about 250 million, the majority of whom are Sunni Muslims.
