Wildfires are often seen as natural disasters, but the reality is far more complex.
In this video, we explain the key differences between natural wildfires and human-caused wildfires—and why most forest fires today are no longer part of nature’s balance.
Natural wildfires usually start from lightning strikes and have existed for millions of years. These fires play an important role in many ecosystems by clearing dead vegetation, recycling nutrients, and helping forests regenerate.
Human-caused wildfires, however, are a different story.
More than 80 percent of wildfires worldwide are started by human activities—such as unattended campfires, land clearing, burning waste, and discarded cigarettes. These fires often occur at the wrong time and in the wrong places, making them more destructive and harder to control.
Unlike natural fires, human-caused wildfires burn hotter, spread faster, destroy wildlife habitats, release massive amounts of carbon, and worsen climate change. They also produce dangerous smoke that threatens human health across entire regions.
Understanding the difference between natural and human-caused wildfires is crucial. Preventing wildfires doesn’t mean stopping all fires—it means stopping the wrong ones.
