The Resolution of Inflammation
In this video I cover how the body ensures that inflammation is a limited acute response allowing the body to return to homeostasis. I also cover what causes the body to not return to homeostasis and instead remain in a state of chronic inflammation. I will address how this chronic inflammation can contribute to several diseases.
Learning objectives
Understand the stages of inflammation resolution and the relative time frames of each.
Explain how oedema signaling is self-limiting by its very nature (single shot events, signal molecule half-life)
Understand the role of the pituitary/adrenal axis in oedema and inflammation in general resolution.
Explain how the neutrophilic response is self limiting through several mechanisms
Adhesion molecule cleavage
Cytotoxic compounds limit DAMP and PAMP receptor activation and inflammatory signaling
Neutrophil's internal clock inducing apoptosis
Explain negative feedback and homeostasis with macrophage inflammation resolution as an example
Glucocorticoids
Anti-inflammatory cytokines
Resolvins
Understanding how persistent pathology can lead to chronic inflammation with examples
Explain the local nature of chronic inflammation with examples
