This video provides a high-yield First Aid–style explanation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Appendicitis for NRE-1 and USMLE Step 1 preparation.
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome):
A chronic functional GI disorder presenting with recurrent abdominal pain, related to defecation, and associated with changes in stool frequency or stool consistency. No structural disease. Triggered by stress, abnormal gut motility, and diet. Diagnosis is clinical (Rome IV criteria). Management includes low-FODMAP diet, fiber, antispasmodics, and stress reduction.
Appendicitis:
Acute inflammation of the appendix, commonly due to obstruction (fecalith in adults, lymphoid hyperplasia in children). Pain begins periumbilical and migrates to RLQ (McBurney point). Associated with fever, nausea/vomiting, rebound tenderness, and classic signs (Rovsing, Psoas, Obturator). Diagnosis via clinical exam + Ultrasound/CT. Treatment is urgent appendectomy.
This lecture is perfect for medical students, NRE-1 candidates, and USMLE Step 1 learners looking for clear, short, high-yield GI concepts.
