Tin Cup Pass is a scenic Colorado 4x4 trail connecting St. Elmo Ghost Town to the historic mining town of Tincup. This moderate difficulty trail features the famous Mirror Lake water crossing, heavily rutted sections, muddy conditions, and stunning alpine scenery in the Sawatch Range. Join us as we navigate challenging terrain, cross deep water, and get stuck in mud on this increasingly difficult Colorado trail.
TIN CUP PASS TRAIL OVERVIEW:
Location: Sawatch Range, Colorado (between St. Elmo and Tincup)
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (rated 5-6 out of 10, conditions vary)
Length: Approximately 22 miles St. Elmo to Tincup
Elevation: Summit at 12,154 feet
Vehicle Requirements: High-clearance 4x4 required, stock capable but challenging
Best Season: July through September (snow-dependent)
Trail Conditions: Increasingly rutted from side-by-side traffic
WHAT MAKES TIN CUP PASS CHALLENGING:
While historically considered a moderate trail, Tin Cup Pass has become significantly more challenging due to heavy side-by-side traffic creating deep ruts and muddy conditions. The Mirror Lake water crossing (around mile 10 from St. Elmo) can be deep depending on season and recent rain. Expect muddy sections, rocky climbs, and heavily rutted terrain that tests traction and clearance.
TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS & OBSTACLES:
Mirror Lake water crossing (can be 12-18 inches deep)
Deep mud sections with potential for getting stuck
Heavily rutted trail from UTV traffic
Rocky climbs requiring careful line choice
Historic St. Elmo Ghost Town (starting point)
Tincup mining town (destination)
Alpine scenery and mountain vistas
12,154-foot summit crossing
MIRROR LAKE WATER CROSSING:
The Mirror Lake crossing is the signature obstacle on Tin Cup Pass. Water depth varies by season - early summer can see deeper crossings from snowmelt, while late season may be shallower. Scout the crossing before committing. The lake bottom is generally solid but approach and exit can be muddy. This crossing is a popular photo opportunity and the most memorable moment of the trail.
VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS & RECOMMENDATIONS:
High-clearance 4x4 absolutely required
33" tires minimum (35" helpful for deep ruts)
Lockers helpful but not required
Rock sliders or rocker protection recommended
Skid plates for undercarriage protection
Recovery gear essential (winch, straps, traction boards)
Aired-down tires help with traction in mud
Experienced driver recommended - not a true beginner trail despite historical ratings
TRAIL CONDITIONS WARNING:
Trail conditions have deteriorated significantly in recent years due to heavy side-by-side traffic. What was once a moderate trail now features deep ruts, muddy sections, and challenging obstacles that can catch unprepared drivers off guard. Don't let older trail ratings fool you - this trail demands respect and proper equipment.
ST. ELMO TO TINCUP ROUTE:
Starting from the historic St. Elmo Ghost Town, the trail climbs through alpine terrain to the 12,154-foot summit before descending to Tincup. The route passes through stunning mountain scenery, historic mining areas, and the famous Mirror Lake. Allow 3-4 hours for the full crossing depending on conditions and stops.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:
Weather changes rapidly above 12,000 feet
Afternoon thunderstorms common in summer
Cell service unreliable - travel with others
Bring recovery gear - getting stuck is possible
Water crossings can be deeper after rain
Trail can be busy with side-by-sides on weekends
Altitude sickness possible - hydrate properly
