Not all shaking is seizures, and not all seizures are epileptic seizures. A young child between 6 months and 5 years old - with a peak at 18 months - can have seizures when they spike a fever. It's a common reason why parents bring their child into emergency rooms.
There are simple febrile seizures and complex febrile seizures. Our job is to determine which type your child has, do they require blood tests and imaging, and can they go home.
Fever medications like Tylenol and Motrin do NOT prevent febrile seizures, and simple febrile seizures do not increase their risk of epilepsy later in life.
Check with your doctor about any concerning symptoms and always call 911 in the event of any medical emergency.
