What happens on the Welland Canal during the winter? The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority starts this winters maintenance by emptying the canal between Locks 1 and 7 to repair and maintain the physical infrastructure. The Canal is closed to shipping between January 7th and March 22nd and this enables work crews to carry on without having to schedule around any ships going through the canal.
