Boulez’s language evolved out of a post-war celebration of freedom of expression. In the modern political climate, the word “woke” has come to be associated with basic civil liberties, including freedom of speech and expression. Rashaan’s gorgeous miniature evokes this important trope, while also paying hommage to the generation of composers after Boulez, who took his sonic innovations to new heights, inventing a style of music known as Acoustic Music Concrète. This genre attempts to recreate the vast sonic palette of electronic music with acoustic sounds. You will notice the use of extended techniques, such as noteless glissandi, gently pulling up on keys, and even vocal effects to be performed by the pianist.
