A song with many names, but so well-known and so old that it's widely recognized wherever the melody is heard in the old-time and fiddle tune scene. It was introduced, however, to the bluegrass world by John Hartford.
"The Squirrel Hunters" is a nickname given to both ordinary and militiamen that came to the defense of Cincinnati, Ohio when it was threatened by Confederate forces. Over 15,000 regular men showed up when called to volunteer, the Union army not having enough men.
