STORYLINE:

Just hours after the Tel Aviv bombing, Israeli bulldozers on Thursday began demolishing buildings outside Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Israeli tanks entered Arafat's compound and attacked his office building as the Israeli government demanded the Palestinian leader hand over militants it claims are responsible for terrorist attacks.

Several Palestinians inside the compound surrendered to Israeli forces during the siege.

Israel TV said the Cabinet decided to reimpose a quarantine on Arafat, trapping him inside the building.

In an earlier operation last April, Israeli tanks confined Arafat to his office for nearly six weeks.

Officials said Arafat was in the building when the Israeli tanks moved in.

Israel has held Ramallah under siege for most of the year, with tanks breaking into Arafat's city-block-sized compound several times.
