Hidden in the Wayanad hills of Kerala are the Edakkal Caves, though technically they are not caves but a natural cleft between two massive rocks. Their walls are covered with mysterious petroglyphs, some of the oldest in India.
These are not simple drawings. There are over 400 symbols carved across different time periods, with the oldest dating back to around 6000 BCE, making them nearly 8,000 years old.
Here you will find geometric patterns, human figures with elaborate headdresses, symbols resembling wheels or suns, animals, and perhaps most intriguingly, script-like carvings that resemble Indus Valley symbols, though they may predate or be contemporary with them.
Some symbols bear similarities to those in Sumeria and Egypt, raising fascinating questions. How could such distant connections exist thousands of years ago?
Who carved these symbols? Were they early travelers, indigenous tribes, or an unknown civilization? What language or message were they trying to convey?
Despite decades of study, most of the Edakkal symbols remain undeciphered. These ancient people left a message that we are still trying to understand.
Carved in stone, lost in meaning, the Edakkal symbols guard a prehistoric world we can’t yet read.
