In the television business, content like LifeTime TV’s American Beauty Star
is referred to as ‘Competition’ or even ‘Elimination Competition’ shows.
This means that as a contestant, not only must I be mindful of not being eliminated, but I
must also deal with the knowledge that each challenge I survive is somehow at the
expense of another artist—someone I have come to appreciate and bond with… someone
who’s going home at the end of the episode.
Just as I was waxing nostalgic—the eighth episode of the ABS show—the rainmakers
pulled an amazing trick: they brought back artists who’ve been eliminated in previous
episodes to work as a teammate to each one of us.
Extra complicating-motivating clause: the teammate in the winning team regains his or
her privileges as a bona fide American Beauty Star
contestant.
I was all at once perplexed and elated. But there was no time to dwell on anything:
as last week’s winner, I was offered the chance to be the first to choose. Ever the
egalitarian, I picked Jenny, who was sent home at the end of the very first challenge.
I admit this was a diabolically thought-out twist to an already nail-biting competition.
Seeing as there were four teams left in contention, the theme-challenge for each one of
us was to create an editorial look featuring one of the four seasons of the year; of course,
fashion collections are also issued on a seasonal basis, so this would be a great exercise.
“We want to see what you do with a common essential industry assignment,” Sir John
clarified.
Sir John ushered in two industry personalities: Huda and Mona Kattan, co-founders of
Huda Beauty, a brand known to be the fastest growing in the beauty space, whose IG
footprint is 20-million strong. Huda will be seated as a judge on this 8th Episode.
Another criterion on which the judges will adjudicate this competition is our ability to
work productively with our teammate.
Ninety minutes on the clock.
When the camera visits my workshop, I’m nonchalantly saying the following on national
TV: “Winter is my season. I’m going for a subzero dark evil snow queen allure. We have
not really experienced my dark side, and I’m excited to showcase it. Everybody has a
dark side, so I think it’s OK to embrace it and see the beauty in it. My inspiration is like a
XVIII century Marie-Antoinette with an evil snow queen kind of maleficent vibe.”
In hindsight, I realize it’s a miracle that my solo brainstorm did not get me
excommunicated.
