Medical Causes of Abdominal Pain | Exam Traps for Medical and Nursing Students
Abdominal pain is not always surgical. In this lecture, we look at important medical causes of abdominal pain that students and junior clinicians must not miss.
We cover common and serious conditions including DKA, acute coronary syndrome, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, renal colic, medication-related abdominal symptoms, and metabolic causes.
The lecture also highlights key exam traps, such as assuming all abdominal pain is surgical, missing cardiac causes of epigastric pain, being falsely reassured by diarrhoea, forgetting DKA, skipping pregnancy testing, and trusting normal early observations.
This session is designed for medical students, nursing students, and junior clinicians preparing for clinical placements, OSCEs, and emergency medicine assessments.
