Geoffrey Hodson was a Liberal Catholic priest, Theosophist, esotericist and writer who was especially Knowledgeable on the Ancient Wisdom, symbology and what is known as the "sacred language"(also known as the "mystery language") .
In sacred symbology and, more specifically, Biblical numerology, the number “seven” represents the New Testament. Seven is also one of the greatest power numbers in Judaism, representing creation, good fortune and blessing. The number seven also signifies fullness in the world of phenomena as well as individual completeness. For example, Solomon was seven years in the building of the Temple. (Note. The number "twelve" signifies corporate, as opposed to individual, completion and completeness, totality and wholeness.)
The number seven also signifies the perfection of the human soul (eg the seven mighty Spirits before the throne, seven golden candlesticks [Book of Revelation], seven sacraments in the Catholic tradition of Christianity, etc.) Charles Fillmore writes that the number seven symbolises the celestial man fully regenerated. The number seven is also a number of reflection and observation. In a Biblical context, seven represents the Sabbath or the day of rest. There is the traditional Hebrew seven-day period of mourning.
The Bible is replete with things grouped in sevens. Besides the creation and the exalted status of the Sabbath (the seventh day), there are seven laws of Noah, seven Patriarchs and Matriarchs, and seven Archangels. Several Jewish holidays are seven days long. Jewish priestly ordination takes seven days. The Land of Israel was allowed to lie fallow one year in seven. The menorah in the Temple has seven branches. The prophet Zechariah describes a strange celestial stone with seven eyes. Events, prayers and esoteric observances that involve multiples of seven are also common in Judaism. Entities both natural (gold) and supernatural (angels) are often grouped by sevens (see I Enoch ch 20; II Enoch ch 19).
Seven is a factor in many occult elements and events. The first verse of the Torah consists of seven words. Seven is the recurrent number in Pharaoh’s divinatory dreams in Genesis. The walls of Jericho fall after the Israelites encircle it seven times. In the Zohar, the seven lower sefirot are those aspects of God that are present in asiyah, our world of action. even is also the preferred number in spells, magic squares, amulets and the like.
In short, seven is the most spiritual of all the numbers.
