As a parent, you want the best for your child. And when they are sick, it can be tough to know what to do. Asthma is a common childhood illness that affects millions of children worldwide. So, how do you know if your child has asthma?

Asthma is a breathing disorder that involves the airways becoming inflamed. This causes the muscles around the airways to tighten and swell and cause trouble breathing.

One of the most common signs of asthma is a persistent cough, especially at night or early in the morning. This cough may be dry or accompanied by phlegm.
Wheezing is another common symptom of asthma. This is a high-pitched whistling sound that is heard when your child breathes.
It’s usually the result of some form of “trigger” that causes the asthma episode including but not limited to: viral respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, or allergens like dust or pet dander.


Some examples of the signs and symptoms of asthma are:
• Chest tightness and pain
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing and wheezing
• Difficulty sleeping

If you suspect that your child has asthma, it's important to talk to your pediatrician. They can perform a physical exam, ask about your child's symptoms, prescribe medications to relieve the symptoms associated with asthma, and refer to pulmonary specialists who can perform lung function tests.

Asthma can be managed with a combination of controller and quick-relief (or rescue) medications. Controller medications can be pills or inhalers.
With proper diagnosis and treatment, your child can lead a happy and healthy life with asthma.
