Everyone knows about Saint Valentine and Valentine's Day, but few know that before it, the Dacians and their Romanian descendants, celebrated love from ancient times, on February 24, their Saint Valentine bearing the name of Dragobete.
A legend says that Dragobetele, son of Dochia and nephew King Decebalus, was the god of love and good mood. It was also called Spring Cap or Summer Cap and was identified with Cupidon, the god of love in Roman mythology, and with Eros, his correspondent in Greek mythology.
Another name for him was the Stormtrooper, being perceived as a handsome and needy boy who made young girls lose their minds. A kind of Flyer then metamorphosed by the Mother of God (Virgin Mary) into a flower.
Among the Dacians, he was the god who officiated the wedding of all animals at the beginning of spring. In Greek mythology, birds were regarded as messengers of the gods, "bird" in Greek meaning "message of heaven," and over time, this tradition spread to humans.
On Dragobete, girls and boys meet so that their love lasts the whole year, like the birds that "get engaged" on this day. Following the model of the fliers, girls and boys met to celebrate Dragobetele to stay in love throughout the year. If the weather was favorable, they would gather in groups and go out to the forest howling and clucking, to pick the first flowers of spring: the snowdrop and the bracken. From the melted snow, the girls made reserves of water with which they washed themselves during certain holidays during the year.
Although the locals believe that Dragobetele from heaven officiated marriages between non-speaking women, over time the legend took another turn, Dragobetele signifying the coming of spring and the awakening of nature to life.
The legend of Dragobete says that all those who participated in the parties on this day were safe from diseases. Popular beliefs hold that on Dragobete householders received the heavenly blessing of the God of Love, giving them prosperity and abundance in their homes and households.
On Dragobete, every Romanian celebrates love, being more careful with each other, giving the loved one the most beautiful gifts.
