The Shirelles were an American girl group that gained fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Formed in 1957 by Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie "Micki" Harris, and Beverly Lee while they were still in high school in Passaic, New Jersey, they are considered one of the pioneering acts of the girl group era. The Shirelles achieved their first major hit with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" in 1960, which was the first song by an all-female group to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Other popular songs include "Mama Said," "Soldier Boy," and "Baby It's You." Known for their blend of doo-wop, rhythm and blues, and pop music, The Shirelles played a crucial role in defining the sound of the early 1960s. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
