Want to protect your young plants from the ravages of slugs and snails? A classic gardening tip is to use crushed eggshells to discourage them. Shame it doesn't work, says botanist James Wong. Although you may think the sharp edges would irritate these land molluscs’ soft bodies, trials have consistently shown that barriers made from rough materials are ineffective. This may be because the thick mucus these creatures produce creates a smooth, slippery trail across even the sharpest surfaces.
