Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus once again mentioned the “Seven Sisters” in his farewell speech—but notably did not mention India by name. The “Seven Sisters” refer to India’s seven northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. These states do not have direct access to the sea and are connected to the rest of India through a narrow stretch of land known as the Siliguri Corridor, often called the “Chicken’s Neck.”
Yunus stated that Bangladesh’s open access to the sea could serve as a gateway for the entire region to connect with the world. His suggestion implied that Nepal, Bhutan, and the seven northeastern states could benefit in terms of trade and economic growth if they utilized Bangladesh’s ports and connectivity routes. However, the absence of India’s explicit mention while referring to its northeastern states raised eyebrows.
In India, the statement is being viewed not merely as an economic proposal but as a potentially sensitive political signal. The North-East is strategically crucial, particularly due to its proximity to the China border and its security significance.
The key question now is: Was this purely about trade and regional connectivity, or was there a deeper political message behind it?
