Kingdom of Zod is a song by Canadian rock band Billy Talent, released in 2014 as part of their compilation album Hits. The song is one of the two previously unreleased tracks from the album, along with Chasing the Sun. It’s about how some people in power manipulate citizens to gain more control and impose their ideology on others. The lyrics criticize the politicians who lie, cheat, and cover up their crimes, and urge the people to resist and fight back. The song also references the fictional planet Zod from Superman comics and movies, which was ruled by a tyrannical dictator named General Zod.
Ben Kowalewicz, singer of the band and author of the song, drew inspiration from then-current Toronto mayor Rob Ford when writing the lyrics. He said in an interview with Alternative Press: “I was watching this guy on TV who was basically lying through his teeth every day and I thought it was so ridiculous that he was still in power.” He also said that he wanted to write a song that would make people angry and motivated to take action against corruption.
