In this video by Pardha Mantravadi from Texavi, you will learn that traceability is key in agile development methods as it provides a way to implement the transparency and inspection, the founding principles of agile. Forward traceability is the ability to trace and track from requirements down through to design, code and test cases. It is also referred to commonly as top-down traceability and provides an insight into the progress of the execution.
Backward traceability, on the other hand is about tracing from the features back up to the test cases, blocks of code, design, architecture and all the way to requirements. This is some times also called as bottom-up traceability in the agile context. As you could imagine, backward traceability is the opposite of forward traceability and offers a way to check and make any changes in the relevant artefacts if there were any changes in the core features.
Often referred to as 'round-trip traceability', both these types of traceability give the power to agile teams to be able identify, validate and amend any linkages among the several aspects and artefacts involved in the software development lifecycle.
Watch the video to get an overview of traceability and how it helps in the agile software development projects.
